DETAILED DEFINITIONS OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY CADRES UNDER THE UGANDA NURSES AND MIDWIVES EXAMINATION BOARD
1. Registered Bachelor of Science Nursing
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing for Registered Nurses (RN-BSN) Program is designed with an aim to keep pace with the changing demands of the global healthcare services and to align with international standards of nursing education, thereby provide the Registered Nurses with diploma, an opportunity to acquire a broad liberal university education with particular emphasis on competencies. It will enhance their professional development and prepare them for a broader scope of practice. It will provide avenue to the graduates to undergo higher education in nursing.
2.Registered Bachelor of Science Midwifery
Midwifery is a sub-field of the healthcare professions that deals with providing services for pregnant women, new mothers and their infants. Certified nurse-midwives are involved in prenatal and postnatal medical care, in counselling and offering support, and in preparing families for parenthood. Professional midwives usually work in public or private hospitals, small maternity units, birth centres, or are self-employed.
In order to practice midwifery, students have to complete at least an undergraduate degree in midwifery or in a related field. Academic learning involves a great amount of time spent in clinical practice.
3. Registered Masters of Science Nursing MSN – UNMEB Nursing and Midwifery Cadre Output 2022/2023
MSN means Master of Science in Nursing. This type of degree allows Registered Nurses (RNs) or BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) graduates to advance their careers. MSN programmes help students to specialise in various areas and further develop their knowledge and skills through intense practice and theoretical classes. An MSN degree is also necessary if you want to apply for doctorate studies in Nursing.
4.Registered Health Tutor-Nursing
Nurse tutors are responsible for the delivery of both pre- and post-registration teaching in higher education. As well as playing an essential role in planning, developing and evaluating course modules, the position usually includes being a personal tutor to students. If you’ve enjoyed helping students get experience in a particular area of practice, or found developing professional knowledge in a specialist area rewarding, becoming a nurse tutor could offer you the opportunity to make sure the next generation of nurses are competent and confident in the practice setting.
There are some professional requirements: you will need to be on an appropriate part of the UNMEB professional register, and have worked full-time (or the equivalent part-time) in areas where students were gaining practical experience.
A degree-level masters qualification would also be helpful – if you do not have one, you will be expected to work towards this in post. Having undertaken research in your particular field of expertise and previous teaching experience will also be useful – any evidence of gaining professional knowledge will improve your application.
