The programme is designed to give experienced registered nurses an opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide holistic nursing care. The programme will enable the graduates to use the existing theories and research findings in the provision and promotion of health services, illness prevention and management of patients/clients in a variety of settings. It will further enable the graduates to develop and integrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills into the practice of nursing. The graduates will also be able to provide leadership at institutional and national levels influencing policies in both the public and private sectors.
Aga Khan University Uganda Entry Requirements
Academic Qualifications:
- Form IV level of education with a minimum aggregate of Division III in the Ordinary Certificate of Education with a “Credit” grade in the following mandatory subjects: English and Biology/Biological Sciences and a “Pass” grade in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
- Certificate of Registration in General Nursing (RN) with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
- At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a Registered Nurse.
- Form VI qualification with a Principal Pass in Biology/Biological Sciences in “A” Level.
- Certificate of Registration in General Nursing (RN) with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
- At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a Registered Nurse.
- 1 Completed and signed application for admission
- 2 Certified copy of secondary school certificate
- 3 Certified copy of Enrolled Nursing certificate
- 4 Certified copy of Enrolled Nursing transcript
- 5 Certified copy of certificate of enrolment/registration with applicable Nursing Council
- 6 Letter of release/recommendation from current employer
- 7 Two passport-sized photographs
Curriculum
In the first year, you will explore the biomedical sciences such as anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathophysiology, before moving onto advanced concepts in medical surgical nursing.
You will have the opportunity to engage in critical analysis, improve your academic writing and investigate the connection between information technology and healthcare.
During the second year, the modules will give you exposure to the social determinants of health, reproductive health, child health, community health, and mental health and psychiatry. You will get an opportunity to engage in research and teaching and learning.
In the final half-year, you will focus on leadership and management skills, on the planning and decision making needed to deliver care effectively.
You can also take an elective course that can improve and change practice through an evidence-based project.

The programme is offered over two-and-a-half academic years consisting of a total of 130 weeks.

The programme honours the normalcy of women’s lifecycle events, appropriate use of interventions and technology for current or potential health problems.
Nursing and midwifery preparation believes in consultation, collaboration and referral with other members of the health care team as needed to provide optimal health care to women and their families. This programme will prepare nurses to provide safe, competent, culturally responsive and quality care at all levels of the health care system with focus on reproductive, maternal, new-born and child health for the families and communities by integrating knowledge, skills and attitudes from humanistic, behavioural and natural sciences.
Academic Qualifications:
- Form IV education; “O” level, with a “Credit” in English and Biology or Biological Sciences, a “Pass” in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics and a Division III minimum aggregate.
- Certificate of Registration issued by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
- At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a RM or RCN.
Aga Khan University Uganda Entry Requirements
- “A” Level with a “Principal Pass” in Biology or Biological Sciences.
- You must have a Certificate of Registration issued by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
- At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a RM or RCN Practicing Registered Midwives and Registered Comprehensive Nurses are encouraged to apply.

Curriculum

During the second year, the modules will give you exposure to the complications of the childbearing cycle, emergency and referral, behavioural psychology and counselling as well as new-born complications, epidemiology and demography.

Aga Khan University Uganda Entry Requirements
Aga Khan University Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing – see details below:
AKU is the first University to offer a specialty Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing in the region. This 18–month “work-study” programme, fully approved by the Nursing Council of Kenya, will help you earn your diploma while working. Classes and clinical experiences will be scheduled for two days per week so that students can continue working while taking classes. The programme will be offered at the Nairobi Campus of Aga Khan University and is open to any nurse who meets the minimum requirements.
Nurses enrolled in the programme must be able to travel to the Nairobi campus for two days per week to attend classes and clinical placements.
The opportunities the graduates will get include: working as general nurses in a general ward or as specialist nurses in an oncology ward, outpatient oncology clinic, chemotherapy suite, radiotherapy unit, paediatric ward and palliative care unit.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following minimum university entrance requirements:
Must have form four (IV) level of education with a minimum aggregate score of C (Plain) in KCSE; Division two (II) in KCE/EACE.
A minimum C (Plain) grade in English and Biology/Biological Science.
At least two years continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a Registered Nurse, preferably in an oncology or medical-surgical setting.
A current registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya and a valid practicing license.
Students meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to write an English competency test and pass a basic nursing exam along with screening interview.

Curriculum
The programme is based on the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology standards and competencies for the specialist oncology nurse and is adapted to the Kenyan context. The programme has 16 modules which will cover cancer screening and diagnosis, different cancers and their treatment, management of treatment related to side effects, paediatric cancers, palliative cancer and rehabilitation.
The programme is offered over 18 months. Each academic year begins on the first week of August.
Aga Khan University KRCHN/ EN-RN Conversion – see details below:
two-year programme is designed specifically for enrolled nurses who wish to enhance their knowledge and advance in their careers as health professionals. As an enrolled nurse, this programme gives you a chance to convert your nursing license, obtain a higher education diploma and become a registered nurse thus obtaining a full license. This means that you will have the knowledge and skills that enable you to provide the most current and up to date evidence-based nursing care.
The programme will equip the learners with knowledge, attitudes, and skills that will enable them to provide quality promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative care to individuals, families and communities at all levels. The learners will also utilize leadership skills for managing care at the institutional level.
Applicants must meet the following minimum university entrance requirements:
- 1 Must have form four (IV) level of education with a pass in the National examination (minimum aggregate of division four (IV)).
- 2 Must have a passing grade in English and Biology/Biological Science (s) plus a passing grade in one of the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Physical Sciences.
- 3 Must be enrolled nurses with current license/registration with the Tanzania or Zanzibar nurses and Midwives Council.
- 4 Must have a minimum of two years of continuous nursing experience in a clinical setting.
- 5 Must be working in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania or its surrounding areas or Zanzibar.

The curriculum includes biomedical sciences, social sciences, general/clinical nursing; midwifery and related subjects. In particular, this programme offers 25 courses.
A total of 1,510 hours are dedicated to direct contact with the faculty in classroom teaching and supervised clinical learning activities. A total of 1,040 hours are set out for self-directed learning activities. In addition, students will complete a total of 55 weeks (or 1,650) in specified clinical placements as required by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
The clinical learning component will take place within students’ work environment and other clinical settings under the supervision of trained preceptors. Each placement will have specific learning objectives to guide the learning that will take place in approved hospitals, psychiatric/mental health hospitals, and community based health facilities/settings.

The programme is offered over two-and-a-half academic years consisting of a total of 130 weeks. An academic year runs from August to July every year and is divided into two semesters of 18 weeks, followed by eight weeks of intensive clinical experience. The first semester starts in the second week of August and ends in the second week of December.
